Meet the Expert Joy Johnston

Posted: July 26, 2017

At Influence Health, our blog contributors are our subject matter experts, including Joy Johnston. Joy is one of our Digital Strategy and Marketing Consultants. Here are 7 questions to get to know her better.

1. What’s your day-to-day look like?
Are we talking about a Monday or a Friday? Each day brings something new, which is exciting. I don’t feel like I am working on the same thing over and over; it can range from being more creative one day to analyzing data or collaborating with internal teams and clients the next day. Ultimately each day ends with providing strategic solutions and helping our clients accomplish their business goals.

2. What’s the one lesson you’ve learned in this business that’s stuck with you?
Patience and perseverance. Having worked in both a large academic medical center and a local non-profit health system, I know healthcare does not move as quickly as other industries. There are multiple stakeholders with important perspectives who are involved at every stage in the decision-making process, which can result in a slow process for complex decisions. The key to success is having the willingness to be patient, flexible and open to different solutions to accomplish goals, even if the timeline is a little longer than we hoped for.

3. What’s one thing you wish our clients knew about Influence Health?
Our team is awesome! I must say I am pretty lucky to work with a group of people who love to collaborate, whether with clients or internal teams, and are willing to do so at a moment’s notice with genuine enthusiasm at the opportunity. We are all committed to making the healthcare consumer’s journey better, and are extremely passionate about what we do.

4. What’s the next big thing you’re working on?
There are a lot of projects I’m working on, but the biggest is developing a comprehensive web strategy and design for a client on our new content management platform.

5. What irks you the most about healthcare today?
How slow healthcare moves in regards to adopting digital technology. I should be used to it by now having worked in healthcare and higher education over the last 15+ years, but it still surprises me. As a consumer, I am making decisions quickly with the help of mobile technology. I want to be able to handle everything digitally: find a provider, schedule an appointment, communicate with my provider, access my medical record, etc. Like most other health consumers, I’m busy and I need the ability to interact with my healthcare provider quickly and easily.

6. What matters the most to you as a healthcare consumer?
Having providers that treat me as a person. I recently visited an urgent care facility for a terrible sinus infection and didn’t want to go through the hassle of trying to get an appointment with my primary care provider. The next day my primary care provider sent a message to me (via the patient portal, of course) telling me he was sorry I had to go to the urgent care and hoped I felt better. For me, this personal touch is the ultimate in a healthcare consumer experience!

7. What’s your biggest health vice: coffee, tea, chocolate, sugar, carbs?
Depends on the day, but if you see me eating a large serving of loaded fries with cheese and bacon, don’t ask if you can have one. I’m in mental overdrive and need all the comfort of carbs I can get!
