After 5 years of service, Influence Health employees are offered the opportunity for a sabbatical. The primary purpose of the Sabbatical Program is to allow employees time to recharge, rejuvenate, and return to work re-energized. Sabbaticals are planned, strategic job-pauses during which an employee should take time to engage in activities they may not otherwise have the time to do such as travel, volunteer, do research, learn a new skill, or fulfill a lifelong dream before returning to work.

Dale Edwards, SVP of Strategic Accounts, shares about his sabbatical.

1. What do you do at Influence Health and what is your title?

I’m the Senior Vice President of Strategic Accounts responsible, for overseeing the team that manages Influence Health’s largest and most strategic accounts.

2. Where did you go and why did you choose to go there?

I am married with 2 boys - 12 and 14 - who love water and sports, so our sabbatical was all things water! We started at Smith Lake, AL for the first 10 days and caught up with college friends and family. We then spent a week at Punta Cana at the Hard Rock Resort in the Dominican Republic and finished the sabbatical with a 5-day trip to Gulf Shores, AL. In between the trips we played as much golf as possible.

3. How long did it take to plan the trip?

The trip was very much last minute. We had planned a family vacation to Punta Cana, and we had family visiting us at Smith Lake. Given we had 2 weeks already planned, we figured it was a great time to take the 4-week sabbatical and catch our breath.

4. What did your manager say when you asked for the time off?

He was very supportive that I was taking advantage of the time off, given I had been rewarded the sabbatical for some time but had not used it.

5. Share a favorite memory or two from your trip.

Spending time with my family with zero conflicts was fantastic! We made too many great memories to list them, all but watching my kids body surf for hours at a time at the beach in Punta Cana with such joy and happiness was great! And, of course seeing my younger son get his first birdie in golf was great!

6. How did you feel on your first day back in the office?

Very refreshed and excited to get back into a routine.

7. What would you tell someone worried about being gone/letting go of their projects for that long?

People at Influence Health are on your team and are willing to help. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Get organized ahead of time with projects and deadlines by working with your team. Once you are organized, be willing to let go and shut down. YOLO!

8. Would you do it again? If so, what would you do differently?

I would definitely do it again. I would probably plan further ahead and go to a location on my bucket list – somewhere in Europe, Hawaii etc.

9. Anything else you’d like to share about your sabbatical?

For those of you fortunate enough to work for a company that has sabbaticals, take advantage. I think it’s great for company culture and for loyal, hardworking employees. If you qualify, embrace it and go and enjoy yourself!
