After 5 years of service, Influence Health employees are offered the opportunity for a sabbatical. The primary purpose of the Sabbatical Program is to allow employees time to recharge, rejuvenate, and return to work re-energized. Sabbaticals are planned, strategic job-pauses during which an employee should take time to engage in activities they may not otherwise have the time to do such as travel, volunteer, do research, learn a new skill, or fulfill a lifelong dream before returning to work.

Melissa McClain, Software Engineer, shares about her sabbatical.

1. What do you do at Influence Health and what is your title?

I am a Software Engineer.

2. Where did you go and why did you choose to go there?

We went to Disney World the first week of my sabbatical. Our daughter had graduated in May, and we wanted a way to celebrate her graduation. This was also our first vacation in about 7 years, since our kids play sports we were using our vacation days for tournaments and camps. The rest of the month off was spent at home with the kids and going to Georgia to watch our oldest son play travel ball on the weekends.

3. How long did it take to plan the trip?

We had been planning the trip since last summer.

4. What did your manager say when you asked for the time off?

Have fun!

5. Share a favorite memory or two from your trip.

One of my fondest memories from the trip was the look on the kids' faces when we first got to Disney World – the excitement and awe they had on their face was priceless. For our youngest children, this was the first time they had been to Disney, so it may it even more special. But my greatest memory was just the time to get away with no schedules, no meetings, no games – just family time.

6. How did you feel on your first day back in the office?

I was actually glad to be back at work. While I enjoyed my time off, I enjoy working and making a difference in the company.

7. What would you tell someone worried about being gone/letting go of their projects for that long?

I would tell them to not worry about work and to take this time to make memories with your family and unplugged from schedules.

8. Would you do it again? If so, what would you do differently?

Yes, I would definitely do it again and look forward to the next one in 5 years! The only thing I may have done differently was to make sure that I marked more things off my to-do list. Not much got marked off of my list, but spending time with my family was way more important.

9. Anything else you'd like to share about your sabbatical?

It was great way to get away, unplug, and recharge for work. Coming back wasn't a chore or a burden. The only thing I wish is that it wouldn’t have rained for most of my sabbatical, which interfered with our pool time.

10. When did you take your trip?

Our trip was June 10-18th, while my sabbatical was June 12th-July10th.
